Earth Day in Indianapolis and Your HVAC System

It’s April 22nd. . . Earth Day in Indianapolis — the annual celebration of this planet we occupy. It’s a great time for us all to stop and reflect on the things we can personally do to conserve and maintain this world.

Let’s be honest, the environment can be a hot button issue. And while politicians argue over carbon taxes and climate change, what just about everyone agrees upon is that we only have one Earth, and we should do our best to take care of it using the best information we have available.

But while you and I can’t singlehandedly fix the world’s environmental issues we oftentimes hear about today—and no matter where you or your political party stand on the global warming debate—the truth is there several environmental-friendly actions within our control.

Here are six HVAC-tions you can personally do to help preserve our planet for today and generations to come:

1. Regularly Replace Air Filter

An open passageway for air to travel through your heating and cooling system means the less your unit will have to work. And the less energy used. Find out which filter to choose.

2. Seal Heating and Cooling Ducts

Much like the air filter, well-sealed ductwork can help ensure air passes efficiently through your house—requiring less wear and tear on your HVAC unit to reach and maintain your desired temperature.

3. Install a Programmable Thermostat

Set up your air conditioning and heating system to run at the right capacity for your behavior. For example, program your thermostat to keep the unit turned off when you’re at work, turned down when you’re sleeping, or turn on just before arriving home from vacation.

4. Keep HVAC Equipment Tuned Up

Just like your car needs a regular oil change, your HVAC needs the same regular maintenance—not only to repair issues but also to ensure it’s always working at optimal levels. The better it runs, the friendlier you’re being to the environment. (We happen to know some technicians who can help!)

5. Buy Green Power

For a slightly higher rate, you can buy renewable energy from your power company that comes from such resources as the sun, wind, and water. Here in the Indianapolis area, Duke Energy and Indianapolis Power and Light offer green power solutions.

6. Purchase High-Efficiency Units
