When your air conditioner stops working, and you are waiting on air conditioner repairs, the world stops spinning. Time stands still. And it seems you’ve aged three years while you wait for a service technician to arrive—even if it’s just a few hours.
Heat has that affect on us.
While we at Homsense strive our best to book immediate appointments, it’s not always possible this time of year when many Indianapolis air conditioners simply need repairs or replacements. But we can offer you some solutions while you wait.
Need an AC Repairman Right Now?
Here are seven simple ways to stay cool while you’re waiting for your air conditioner to be repaired:
Keeping the sun’s heat out of your house is the simplest way to keep your house as cool as possible when your air conditioner’s out of commission. Close those curtains, turn down those blinds, and pull those shades.
A good step to take even when you’re A/C’s working fine, make sure that your ceiling fans are rotating counter clockwise during the warmer months. This rotation will help pull warm air up toward the ceiling in spring and summer. Most fans have a small switch on the exterior side of the fan body that you can flip to reverse the blade direction.
During the day, keep as many lights off as possible. And when you do need seem lighting, just be selective on the lamps you choose. CFL and LED light bulbs emit the least amount of heat, while incandescent generate the most.
This step might seem counterintuitive this time of year, as it seems like more of a cold weather activity. But keeping as much cool air inside your house can actually help keep you cool while you wait for A/C repairs to be made. Check your windows for any gaps that need caulking and cover any open spaces under doors—the same way you might do during the winter.
Seems pretty simple, but we oftentimes forget the value of cold beverages, namely water, in keeping our body temperature low. Be sure to drink H2O throughout the day. You could also dip a towel in cold water and keep that around your neck or place it on your forehead.
If you planned to use your stove or oven for cooking, you might want to reconsider your menu when possible. Eat those leftovers or make a nice salad. Or, go to the grocery store and buy some prepared foods that do not require cooking or reheating.
Speaking of getting out, you might also want to get out of your house during the hottest hours of the day. Go to a coffee shop or hang out at the mall. Both locales usually have their A/C units running at their highest levels. Brrrr.
But of course, only take these seven steps after first contacting us at Homesense to schedule your service repair. Give us a call, fill our our contact form, or send us a tweet. We’ll be in touch as soon as possible.
