Trimming Landscape Can Protect your Air Conditioner

As you’re working on your landscaping this spring and summer—fertilizing your grass, edging your sidewalks, and weeding your gardens—don’t forget about the plant life growing up around your air conditioner. Your overgrown plants could be undercutting the life of your cooling unit.

We get it. Indianapolis has some amazing botanical creations to behold this time of year, and it’s easy to sit back and watch nature bloom. But any flowers, bushes, and trees that are growing too close to your air conditioning unit could be highly detrimental to the efficiency of your cooling system and result in unneeded air conditioner repairs.

Higher Outdoor Temperatures Stresses Air Conditioner

As the outdoor temperatures rise and as your air conditioner begins to work harder, the outdoor condenser coils also heat up during the cooling process. And the less breathing room the coils have to work, the less effective your cooling system will operate.

To protect your unit, be sure to keep plants trimmed back from the unit. Air conditioner manufacturers recommend 24 inches of space in all directions around the air conditioning condenser.

The process is pretty straightforward:

1. Grab hedge clippers.

2. Use hedge clippers to cut back plants in close proximity to your air conditioning unit.

3. Return hedge clippers.
