Choosing the Right HVAC Company: More Than Just Fixing Your Furnace

By: Jason Fletcher  |  March 13, 2024

Looking for a trustworthy, local HVAC company in or around Indianapolis can be a daunting task. It takes time and patience to search the web, ask your local neighborhood Facebook group who they’re using, then parse through the reviews and Yelp scores to try to figure out who you should trust to come into your home. Not only is it important to pick a company you can trust, but also one that does quality work.

While technical proficiency is definitely important, there’s more to finding the right heating and cooling company that can do the job right while also exceeding your expectations. Here at Homesense, it’s a driving force for our team. Our techs are different than most you may have been exposed to in the past. Let’s talk about some things to look for and how to know if an HVAC company is a good fit for your needs.

Experience and Expertise

Look for an HVAC company with a proven track record of experience and expertise. A seasoned company is likely to have encountered a variety of HVAC issues, making them well-equipped to handle your specific needs. Check customer reviews and testimonials to see if there are any recurring issues that may be off putting to you. For example, if you see that a company is often late to appointments or hard to reach, that’s a bad sign.

Having been in business since 2009, Homesense is proud to say we’ve pretty much seen it all at this point. Our techs are seasoned and incentivized to do a great job and that’s it. We don’t do any hard selling or “suggested maintenance” that’s not actually needed. Having started in the Meridian-Kessler area, we have years of experience working in older homes and on many types of heating and air conditioning systems. So, whether you have a brand new home or one that is 100 years old, we’ve likely worked on a system just like yours.

Not all HVAC companies are created the same, so do your research to determine if the one you choose is right for you.

Transparent Pricing and Estimates

Another trend we’ve seen in the industry is a push towards misleading marketing practices. Unfortunately, it seems that teasing a “free furnace” is a way that many HVAC companies try to lure people into what seems like a good value, but often ends up costing them much more.

You know the old saying “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is?” Well, that’s the case with these “free furnace” offers. Generally speaking, these companies are charging you an excessive amount for the air conditioner in order to give you the “free” furnace. In addition to the fact that you’re not really getting the furnace for free, you’re also likely getting a low quality, bottom tier furnace that is more likely to fail early and often has a worse (or no) warranty.

At Homesense, we’re proud to say that our furnaces aren’t free, but they’re fairly priced and we won’t sell you one unless you really need it. Often, we can resolve most issues without a full system replacement. With regular maintenance, we can often extend the life of many systems. This is why we offer (and highly recommend) an annual maintenance agreement that means we’ll be there regularly for a low price to keep everything in tip top shape. This also helps you maintain your warranty on these large purchases.

Comprehensive Services and Cutting Edge Technology

Another important factor when choosing an HVAC company is whether they offer all services related to your heating, air conditioning and even indoor air quality. Ensuring that your systems are operating efficiently and safely should be their top priority and the techs that service your equipment should know about all of the new products and options out there for heating and cooling.

We proudly partner with Daikin for products we recommend and install for several reasons. They’ve been operating in the US for over 25 years. Daikin’s focus is on sustainability and efficiency as well as air quality (both inside and outside the home) which drives them to build better products than many competitors.

Speaking of indoor air quality, our techs are specially trained in duct cleaning and the installation of high quality parts to improve your air quality and indoor experience. Indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, so we focus on improving your air quality so you don’t have to breathe in all those particulates.

In addition to furnaces, air conditioners, and indoor air quality, we can also help with heat pumps, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, thermostats and more!

Now that you know a bit more about some things to look for when choosing an HVAC company, hopefully that simplifies finding the right fit for your home.
