Only a few weeks into the warm weather in Indianapolis, one thing is clear, heat pump installations are popular this year. We’ve had more customers call asking us with interest in a new heat pump than anything else. It’s easy to understand why, with the advances in technology that have dramatically expanded the capabilities of air-to-air heat pumps.

What makes heat pumps attractive to homeowners?

Unlike many traditional Indianapolis area forced air heating and cooling systems that require both an air conditioner and gas furnace system, heat pumps paired with a fan coil, supply both the heating and cooling elements required with the wild Indy temperature swings. As HowStuffWorks states, “Heat pumps work by using a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Heat pumps are usually used to pull heat out of the air or ground to heat a home or office building, or they can be switched into reverse to cool a building.”

In the past heat pumps were believed to be exclusively for more southern states. And, based upon their performance, it made sense that opinion was held. Especially here in Indianapolis where the number of heating days far outnumber the number of cooling days, heat pumps of the past had trouble keeping homes warm much below 30-35 degrees which required the use of emergency heat. Thankfully for homeowners manufacturers have continued to refine the technology, dramatically improving heat pump performance.

Now, many heat pumps can save 3, 4, or 5 times the amount of energy needed to keep your home comfortable — and only for a small amount more in cost.
